Ronald D. Sparks was born on July 11th, 1947 in Giles County, Virginia to Imogene and Claude Sparks. “Ronnie” had three brothers and four sisters. Ronald’s game was football: he played as co-captain of the Narrows High School football team, received an honorable mention at all-state selections, and got into William & Mary on a football scholarship. Ron attended the College of William & Mary from 1966 to 1968, before he was drafted into the US Army. Those around him knew he was quiet and humble, and never looking to make trouble; the strong and silent type.
Ronald, or “Sparkman” to his army buddies, was known as a good man and a good soldier in boot camp, and he trained as an indirect fire crewman. Ronald was assigned to D Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. Ronnie was killed on April 6th, 1968. He was killed by enemy artillery fire in the Quang Tri Province: 21 years old.
