Bread Upon the Waters is a semi-fictional archive which explores the disappearance of old America through a soldier’s final memories as he dies in Vietnam. The work is loosely based on the story of a real student from William & Mary who was killed in Vietnam, Ronald David Sparks, who was killed on April 06, 1968. Sparks was from Rich Creek, VA, and got into William & Mary on a football scholarship in 1966 before entering the Army. “Ronnie” was killed by artillery fire in the Quang Tri Province at the age of 21; my age.
"Light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun. However many years a man may live, let him enjoy them all. But let him remember the days of darkness, for they will be many. Everything to come is meaningless.
Be happy, young man, while you are young."
(Ecclesiastes 11:7-9)
